Halloween is the one night of the year when grown-ups happily put on a costume and enjoy a good scare. A murder mystery dinner turns that into more than a costume party: every guest is a character in a murder case, and by the end of the evening it is solved. 6 ready-made Halloween scenarios
Each card opens the configurator with the setting, victim, characters, mood, number of players and game mode already filled in. You just swap in your guests’ names, add a few details — job, quirks, an inside joke — and start the creation. The scenarios are suggestions: you can add or remove characters, change the number of players and adapt everything else to your group.
Three scenarios are set to Free Investigation, three to Guided Investigation. You can read about the difference further down; you can change the mode in the configurator at any time.
Truly spooky (3 scenarios)
Remote places, storms, old legends — and a case you can still crack with a clear head. The Haunted Castle and the Sanatorium are set to the violence level “Brutal”: crime scenes and clues are described graphically, so they are for adults only. In the configurator you can switch to “Moderate”.

Spooky or funny? How to choose the mood
In the configurator you set the mood of the case. On Halloween this is the most important decision, because it changes not just the tone but the whole setting and the characters.
Spooky
A remote, menacing setting — old walls, a storm, no way out. The characters carry dark secrets, and there are eerie hints at the crime scene. Important: the murder still always has a human explanation that can be solved by logic.
Great for groups who want atmosphere and don’t need to laugh all the time.
Humorous
Black humour, quirky characters with odd habits, over-the-top motives. Halloween provides the backdrop — costumes, pumpkins, fake blood — but the case itself stays just as fair and solvable.
Great for costume parties, mixed groups and anyone who wants to keep the evening light-hearted.
Rule of thumb
If your setting is meant to be cosy — a house party, a village fair, a ballroom — choose Humorous. The “Spooky” mood needs a place where people genuinely feel uneasy; otherwise it turns a cosy setting into something other than you expect.
Who plays? Even the host is kept in the dark
With many boxed murder mystery games, the host knows the solution and only runs the game. On Halloween in particular, when the host is already decorating, cooking and welcoming guests, that leaves them on the sidelines.
Crime & Dine .io works differently
Nobody knows the killer in advance — not even the host. Even the killer only finds out during the game. The host plays as a regular suspect and simply takes care of the organisation on top: they unlock the rounds in the web app. The resolution is read aloud at the end, and everyone hears it at the same moment.
Two game modes — you choose when you create it
Guided Investigation
Three set rounds with guided clue distribution. Scripted dialogues open each round, and everyone has concrete leads on their sheet — you always have lines to hand.
Free Investigation new
No scripted dialogues. Each character has their own memories of the evening; you talk freely and uncover the case through the contradictions. A map of the setting is included.
For our scenarios we chose Free Investigation for settings with lots of rooms and paths — that’s where the map really comes into its own. Both modes are equally good; how a murder mystery dinner works in general is explained in our guide “What Is a Murder Mystery Dinner?”.
Costumes: the Halloween advantage
On any other night, a dress code at a murder mystery dinner is a nice extra. On Halloween your guests show up in costume anyway — and a costume that matches their own character makes it far easier to get into the role.
For this, each character sheet in the web app usually includes a costume recommendation for the character. The character part is visible straight away, while the rounds stay locked until you unlock them on the evening. That way you can send every guest the link to their character in advance without giving anything away.
1–2 weeks before
Pick a scenario, enter your guests, create the mystery. The creation itself takes around 30 minutes.
Right after
Send each guest the web link to their character — and point them to the costume recommendation.
On the evening
Playing with printouts? Hand out the character booklets only now, because the printed version contains everything.
Costumes are never mandatory. Anyone who doesn’t dress up plays just the same.
How the Halloween evening runs
A murder mystery dinner takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, spread over three rounds around the three courses. How long it really lasts depends on how much your group loves to debate.
